Thunder Bay to Winnipeg – another long day
of driving (“what? No way! A 4700km
across the country and the driving is long? That’s crazy!” I know, I know, who
would’ve thought.).
The days are starting to blur together a
bit, one long drive punctuated by some really cool stops, beautiful parks, and
interesting hikes (the people have been pretty awesome too!), and the journey
to Winnipeg was no different.
On our way out of Thunder Bay, we stopped
at Kakabeka Falls (pronounced
Kekebeka). They were beautiful, despite
the frosty cold morning; the rays of sunshine peeking out from behind the
clouds certainly helped. It was a lovely
little stop before the impending hours of driving that stretched out before us.
The drive itself was uneventful, which is a
good thing. Crossing the border into
Manitoba, we stopped to take a million photos of the border sign and a silly
video or two. Our video footage is
racking up quickly, but it’ll be fun to string the footage together
once this trip is over, remembering previously forgotten moments along the way
(or if nothing else, remembering what idiots we were along the way).
Hello Manitoba |
Goodbye Ontario |
Welcoming party |
Whiteshell Provincial Park is located close
to the border, so obviously we stopped in.
Found a nice little hiking trail, J grabbed his fishing rod, and off we
went in search of a fishing spot. We had
the park to ourselves (as with every park and trail we ‘ve stopped at so far – the
only kids crazy (although I like to think of it more as ambitious rather than
crazy) enough to be hiking and exploring this time of year. After scrambling down a boulder, we found a
beautiful little spot along the river (only problem is that there were no fish,
but what can you do?). We walked along a
series of rocks leading into the middle of the river, where we watched birds hopping
from rock to tree (me) and did some fishing (him). Whiteshell was the perfect break after
sitting in the car all day.
We didn’t stay in Winnipeg for long, and after
finding a place to crash for the night, we set off in search of Riding Mountain
National Park the next morning – update to come soon! For now, I’ve got some beautiful prairie
farmland to be mesmerized by.
