First stop: Toronto

Kingston to Toronto, 263km and the first leg of our 4700 km road trip complete.  We spent Friday and Saturday in Toronto, being tourists and saying our last goodbyes to the last of our friends, on our way out of town, before embarking on this crazy roadtrip.

A few of the things we got up to:

FRIDAY
-the Ripley's Aquarium, we were both mesmerized by the jellyfish wall.  I think you could stare at that wall for hours and never get bored!

Sawfish and shark

Quintessential aquarium shot!
Leaf seahorse

-Dinner at Momofuku.  Owned by celebrity chef David Chang, every part of dinner was an experience - incredible food, incredible service.  We sat along the perimeter of the kitchen (bar style), and watched the food being prepared, trying to match the dishes to the names on the menu.  Stuffed to the gills, we couldn't resist trying the infamous 'cereal milk' flavoured soft serve with [salty!] cornflake crunch; only one dessert item on the menu means you kind of have to try it.  Spoiler alert: it was amazing!

SATURDAY
-Brunch at Senator with J's friend Chris (she was absolutely lovely) - fluffy pancakes and hot coffee (the perfect start to any morning) followed by a stroll through the St. Lawrence market.  We meandered through the market, stopping at food vendor after food vendor to browse the incredible selection of foodstuffs (homemade squid ink pasta, fish mongers, organic produce, and game meats to name a few).  The rest of the afternoon was spent at the movies, trying to recover from our semi-food comas.

-Dinner and drinks with some of J's high school friends and one of my best friends, C!  It was a bittersweet night, filled with bewilderment (on their behalf at the prospect of driving across the country with no fixed plan, job, or accommodation), happy memories, much laughter, a few pints of course ;) [in a dingy college bar for old time's sake - well actually, because all of the other bars had wait lists, but those are minor details really] and our final goodbyes made slightly better by the possibility of a Christmas reunion.

SUNDAY
This morning we chucked the last of our goodies back into our backpacks, scarfed down some breakfast and made our way to Owen Sound - it was a quiet drive, marked by small country towns, cornfields, cemeteries, and the odd cow or two - where we spent about 2h hiking the Bruce Trail in search of what turned out to be the ever-illusive Bruce caves...turns out, they were right next to the parking lot.  Ah well, better luck next time.  We did get some pretty views and pretty pictures, so all was not lost.  Tomorrow, we go in search of The Grotto (in the Bruce Peninsula), in hopes that, unlike today, the paths are clearly marked (or marked at all for that matter), and there is a map somewhere to be found!
