Regina

Nov.  4, 2014

We didn’t spend a whole lot of time in Regina, but we made the most of our time there, doing some city exploring and crossing some interesting sites off the list.  One of the coolest aspects of this trip has been the rapid contrast between nature and city exploring, hiking parks one day and browsing art galleries (OK, OK…one art gallery, but still) the next. (So far, we’ve hit a national park in every province and managed to go hiking everyday with the exception of two days, not too bad for a couple of kids on the road).

We arrived in Regina early afternoon, filled our bellies with Thai, found a place to crash, and set off to see what Regina had to offer! Our first stop was the Mackenzie Art Gallery at the suggestion of a hometown friend (Thanks A!), and although small, the gallery certainly didn’t disappoint.  We spent a good hour or so lost in the paintings of Wilf Perreault who beautifully captured seemingly everyday sites in Regina, weaving his travel experiences - Paris, Morocco - and perceptions into ordinary sites and places.  It was thought-provoking to say the least.

Having had our fill of culture for one afternoon, we wandered over to the legislative building, a pretty building, overlooking Wascana Lake (I believe).  We sat on the steps for a minute before heading over to the water for a closer look, joking about swimming and ducking to avoid the seagulls flying dangerously close overhead.

Wishing we’d brought the longboards, we made our way back to the hotel before heading to Leopold’s tavern for gingerbeer (!) and pub grub.  It was a cozy little spot and the perfect ending to a day of travel and city exploring.

PS – Day 9 on the road! Woo hoo!
